UNATT hosts Forum on Social Dialogue

Social Dialogue in Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean and Beyond was the theme of a presentation delivered by Rainer Pritzer of the International Labour Organization (ILO), at a forum hosted by the United Nations Association of Trinidad and Tobago (UNATT). Pritzer is the Senior Specialist for Social Dialogue and Labour Administration at the ILO Office for the Caribbean, based in Port of Spain.

Rainer Pritzer   Referring to social dialogue as "a trust-building tool" he stressed that respect for the fundamental rights of freedom of association and collective bargaining (including respect for the other party) is a primary requirement for effective social dialogue.

The ILO defines social dialogue as including all types of negotiation, consul- tation or simply exchange of information between, or among representatives of government, employers and workers on issues of common interest relating to economic and social policy.

When practiced effectively, social dialogue protects the interests of workers while also addressing the concerns of employers. Some other goals include settle disputes; improve working /living conditions; strengthen democratic processes in the workplace and maintain social peace.

In response to questions and comments from an appreciative audience, Pritzer stated that there is no "one-size-fits-all" model of social dialogue - it really depends on the national, economic, historical and cultural context.   Social Dialogue Forum

This was the second forum in UNATT's 2015 Discourse Series.  It was held on July 25 at the Hotel Normandie, St Ann's.
