In 1996 the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 7 December as International Civil Aviation Day. The day has been celebrated by the International Civil Aviation Organization since 7 December 1994, the 50th anniversary of the signing the Convention on International Civil Aviation. The purpose of the day is to recognize the importance of aviation, especially international air travel, to the social and economic development of the world and raise awareness of the importance of international civil aviation.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), of which Trinidad and Tobago is a member, is the United Nations (UN) body responsible for developing international standards for aviation safety. It was established on December 7, 1944, to secure international cooperation and uniformity in civil aviation matters. The International Services Transit Agreement and the International Air Transport Agreement were also signed. ICAO works closely with other United Nations members including the World Meteorological Organization, the International Telecommunication Union, the Universal Postal Union, the World Health Organization and the International Maritime Organization.
